Who Participates in Trading on the Foreign Exchange?

Involvement in Forex Trading Might Surprise You

The more that you start to think about trading Forex, the more that you’re likely to wonder just who it is that trades on the foreign exchange market. Some of the participants might surprise you.

Governments

Governments that trade on the Forex market are going to be focused on a number of long term economic goals. Some of these goals will be national, others are likely to be more regional (a particular state or territory) and some will be based on the global economy. Because of this, some Forex traders look at governments as disrupters of the market.

Banks

Banks, ultimately, make the Forex market what it is. While they may make some trades, the role that banks play often focuses more on lending to the others involved, including governments that trade on the foreign exchange, corporations that are involved, investment funds and their managers and even individual traders.

Investment Funds

When investment fund managers get involved in Forex trading, they do so with attention to long term trends. They begin with a great deal of skill and knowledge, and have a variety of resources available that may not be accessible to other traders. Because investment funds are looking at the long term, in most situations there will be little risk in their choices, and they will have the commitment to see the process through over time.

Corporate Entities

Like investment fund managers, when corporations get involved in Forex they are thinking about the long term. However, they also want to be sure that they are protecting their assets and profits. Therefore, corporations are typically active hedgers who manage their trades well.

Individual Traders

When you get involved with Forex trading as an individual, you’ll be in this category. Most individuals trade on the foreign exchange with the hope of short term gains and, as a result, are likely to take more risks along the way. Traders can approach the market with a lot of knowledge or without any knowledge at all,  may be committed and willing to stick it out for the long term, or they might just be trying to make a few trades here and there to see what happens.

In all cases, those who are most successful with Forex trades are going to be those investors who are able to research trends, to understand what their goals are and to be disciplined enough to achieve those goals.
